Postgraduate Research in the Globalism Institute

The Globalism Institute offers a rich research milieu for postgraduate study in the fields of globalism, transnationalism, multiculturalism, nationalism, identity politics and cultural diversity, engaging particularly with the following issues:
  • Structures of globalisation, both past and present
  • Formations of nationalism and the nation-state, and their continuing though changing relevance
  • Configurations of transnationalism-the changing nature of diasporas, migrant communities and refugees, technological and bio-technological flows
  • Relations of integration-from indigenous and traditional face-to-face communities to the extended relations of mass broadcasting and electronic communication
  • Discourses of critical and ethical engagement, including cosmopolitanism, postcolonialism, communitarianism, and multiculturalism
The aim of the Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts (Research) programs is to prepare graduates to be highly qualified researchers in their chosen area of specialization. A research degree involves the production of a major body of work that is intended to add significantly to the scholarship in the field in which it is undertaken. It is by its nature a qualification demanding the development of a high level of expertise in a particular area of knowledge. Candidates are, of course, expected to exhibit a proportionally greater depth of expertise in a PhD thesis than a Masters thesis. In order to maximize a candidate's ability to successfully complete such a program of extended independent study choosing an appropriate supervisor is essential. By the time a candidate has submitted his or her thesis he or she should have made an original contribution to the body of knowledge in a field, enhanced his or her own abilities, gained a deeper understanding and diversity of experience, and developed the potential for successfully conducting further research in a chosen field.

The following are the specific areas in which the core research group of the Globalism Institute are currently conducting research and are strongly qualified to provide supervision.
